We
are on a mission!
Our goal is to create a Latin American &
Caribbean Heritage Room to become
a showcase for Latin American & Caribbean
culture and heritage in Pittsburgh!
The local Latin American &
Caribbean community, and the Greater Pittsburgh
Community, has united in an effort to promote
the development and secure funding for the
Latin American & Caribbean Heritage
Room. This dream can only become a reality
if we can financially support the design
and construction of the Heritage Room Project.
To achieve this goal, we have
formed a Planning Committee, and in July
of 2003, we elected officers and committee
chairs. You can read more about our devoted
committee members on the COMMITTEE
PAGE!
Our Committee is in its early
stages of planning; however, some of our
goals are: to educate the public about
the advantages of the Heritage Room, to
organize a series of fundraising events,
and to seek grants and donations to support
the the dream!
Our meetings are open to the
public, and we welcome your participation.
Meetings will be announced in advance on
the Meetings
Page of this web site.
Towards these goals, we are
excited and pleased to be launching this
new web site! We hope this web site will
serve as a valuable resource to educate
the public about our mission!
Please visit this site often
for NEWS
and information concerning the Latin American
& Caribbean Heritage Room. We will be
announcing FUNDRAISERS,
MEETINGS,
& CULTURAL
EVENTS on a regular basis.

Design Proposals
We invite you to visit the
Room
Designs Page to view the proposals that
have already been submitted. We want to
encourage submissions from architects both
locally and from around the world! We are
open to reviewing all proposals that fall
within the University's guidelines!
If you'd like to submit a
proposal, please
to our Committee Chairperson,
Cathy Bazán-Arias. She will send
you the complete set of guidelines established
by the University of Pittsburgh, which governs
the Nationality Rooms Program. You will
also receive the room dimensions to assist
you in your design proposal.
Although we have many options
for the final room design, based upon the
proposals we receive and community input,
we are also bound by the official guidelines
for the Nationality Rooms established by
the University of Pittsburgh.
One of these requirements is that the room
must reflect the region before 1787. This
means all elements of the room design must
PREDATE 1787 in order to be included! Why
1787, you might ask? That's the year the
University of Pittsburgh was founded!

What
will the future bring for the Heritage Room?
We envision a bright future,
where thousands of school children, tourists,
University students, friends, and families
take a tour of the Nationality Rooms, which
will someday include the Latin American
& Caribbean Heritage Room!
With thousands of visitors
each year, this is a unique opportunity
for the Latin American & Caribbean Community
to become part of something really special!
Think how wonderful it would be...to become
part of the famous tour of the Nationality
Rooms, which has put Pittsburgh on the map!
In the future, the Latin American
& Caribbean Heritage Room might feature
educational and cultural events. There could
be a Spanish Story Hour for children. There
might be Travel Presentations, with speakers
discussing their home countries; and travelers
discussing their adventures! Through slide
shows, videos, and discussions, people can
learn about the art, music, history, landscape,
and beauty of the Latin American & Caribbean
regions!
Imagine those meetings taking
place in the backdrop of a room, whose rich
beauty, architecture, and design is entirely
dedicated to this region? Amazing, isn't
it? The floor, the walls, the ceiling, the
furniture, the books, the art...all devoted
to enhancing cultural awareness of the Latin
American & Caribbean people!
Let's embrace this opportunity
to leave our mark on history and work together
towards this common goal! Together, we can
make it happen! ¡Sí, se puede!
