History of Special Events

December 5, 2004:  Nationality Rooms Holiday Open House. For the second year in a row, the Latin American & Caribbean Heritage Room had its own booth at the Nationality Rooms Holiday Open House. Heritage Room committee member, Salomé Gutiérrez, offered a wide array of Peruvian merchandise for sale. Many thanks to all our friends who stopped by to visit. For the first time ever, the Latin American & Caribbean Heritage Room was also represented in the dance performances that take place throughout the day at this event. Many thanks to the Latin American Cultural Union for providing the dancers and performing the beautiful native dances from Latin America & the Caribbean.

September 25, 2004:  Brazilian Concert featuring Silvia Lazo & Paul Grove. Benefit for the Latin American & Caribbean Heritage Room. The Heritage Room Committee had the great honor of sponsoring nationally acclaimed musicians, Silvia Lazo & Paul Grove! This talented duo performed a concert of sultry Brazilian music, which was a special treat for the Pittsburgh audience. Paul's dexterity with the guitar and Silvia's crystal-clear soprano voice resonated in Bellefield Auditorium. Many thanks to Silvia & Paul for traveling so far to share their music. Visit them online at: www.silvialazo.com.  The winner of the beautiful Huichol Mask donated by Mexico Lindo was Enrique Aurelio Bernardo Acuña. Congratulations, Enrique!
September 18, 2004:  The 25 Annual Latin American & Caribbean Festival at the University of Pittsburgh. The Latin American & Caribbean Heritage Room Committee had its very own table at this year's festival! We sold raffle tickets for a gorgeous Huichol Mask, which was generously donated by Mexico Lindo. The mask will be raffled off at the Brazilian Concert on Sept. 25, 2004. Proceeds from the raffle will benefit the future Latin American & Caribbean Heritage Room.
May 5, 2004:  Cinco de Mayo Fundraiser at Reed Smith Law Offices, Pgh., PA. Many Thanks to all our friends, who made this year's Cinco de Mayo Benefit a great success! This year, we were extremely honored that the event highlighted Latin American & Caribbean Heritage! Latin American Dancers performed native dances from many countries! PA State Representative, John A. Maher, informed the audience in a surprise announcement that the Latin American & Caribbean Heritage Room project had received a $15,000 grant! We are very grateful for this generous gift, which brings us one step closer to making the Heritage Room a reality!  View Photos from this Event!

Dancers performed native dances from around the world, and the Nationality Rooms were decorated for the holiday season, reflecting each country's unique customs. The International Marketplace presented visitors with an opportunity to purchase ethnic food, and articles of clothing, jewelry, etc. from many cultures. Our own committee's Salomé Carhuaslla Gutiérrez was a wonderful new addition to this year's event, offering beautiful Peruvian merchandise. Salomé donated a percentage of her sales to the Latin American & Caribbean Heritage Room project. GRACIAS! View Photos from this Event!

And over 200 people celebrated the evening and danced until the wee-hours at Cozumel with Banda Azúcar, the Hispanic Chamber of Commerce, Salseros Linda and Mark, and volunteers from the Latin American and Caribbean Heritage Room and the LACU. As the saying goes, “¡Sí se puede!”
